And as long as there’s texting, chatting, and microblogging, there’ll be word abbreviations. So instead of stopping your kids from using these (they won’t) or cursing the new generation for bastardizing human language (they aren’t; who started the abbreviations like TBA, ASAP, FYI, and LBM? Certainly not this new generation, right?), take time to understand these common abbreviations and you’ll realize that it won’t hurt knowing them or using them when appropriate or when communicating with your kids.

Do you know of other abbreviations? Drop it in the comment and I’ll include it here.
Hate the abbreviations? GAL!

that’s too numerous for me to remember
I think abbreviations originated in the early days of the telegraph and then the very slow teletype communications where you literally hear every character typed much like the typewriter. Nowadays the text revolution created a new plethora of more complex abbreviations.
As for LMAO, there’s a variant to it – LFMAO. I guess you can figure it out
i thought it was LMFAO, as in laughing my fat ass off

i’m neither a parent too but i deal with so many Gen Ys every year so this is also a reminder for me. hehe.
Here’s my contribution:

-JTLYK, the only laptop is the small travel laptop i bring around. you should PROLLY bring your big laptop. i just don’t know how you can connect to the wifi, which MSP secured. IKR? i’ll ask him to give me instructions.

Ok then, B4N, HAND and TC Barrycade!

LOL,…I am an avid surfer for nearly a decade now and yet I am only familiar with a tenth of the list…that’s so not good.
I once got taken aback when someone I communicated with expressed the abbr XOXO, like for me X was not like good, so I thought she was mad at me…
It turned out that it was for hugs and kisses…whew!
LOL. I used to think it was part of those emoticons until I learned it was much more than eyes and mouths.
If I were to remember all the abbreviations being used now, I’d probably confuse one for the other. Old school me ahhh!
You are not alone!
I’m familiar with most of the abbreviations posted.
Pero hindi ko ginagamit kadalasan.
Using these abbreviations take some getting used to. Like most people, I don’t think I’ll get used to this. It’s just helpful to know what these means so you know what other people are telling you. haha.
