If the weekly oil price increase in the Philippines will continue, this is probably what’s going to happen:
I recall the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Land Transportation Office (LTO) reporting that volume of cars in EDSA has decreased by 10 percent as a result of high oil prices. I’m quite sure though that this reduction hasn’t made traffic situation in EDSA any better, specially on rush hours.
Even registration of motorcycles, which is now the widely used means of transport in Metro Manila according to government report, has also decreased. This means it will take much longer before Manila’s traffic situation will be similar to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, where motorcycles rule the streets. So let’s rule out this possible scenario for now.
Possible scenario two: rise of “traffic jockey” system similar to Jakarta, Indonesia. But because private car owners here do not trust strangers as passengers, I doubt if this will ever happen.
Possible scenario three: overloading in jeepneys, buses, MRT, LRT, and other public vehicles. But commuting will no longer be as affordable; a ten-peso flag down rate increase in taxi fare is imminent.
Possible scenario four: pedal your way to work or school and back, similar to the increase in bicycle use in China. Some online forums in Manila are now discussing this possibility. In Cebu, the local government has revived the “cops on bicycles” system as a fuel-saving measure. Will our government officials follow the same example by giving up their cars? Wish upon a star! Hahaha!
Do you have other “rush hour” scenarios in mind?

haha. nice vid. funny but sad…
i really hate the oil price thing, too.
i hope things will be better.
ps: come to think of it, maybe the oil price increase in the global market was meant to happen so people ride their bikes and save the environment big time. haha. maybe some secret society is behind all this. haha
acey: yeah, the conspiracy of the rich and powerful over the poor! huhuhu.
the price of gas is ridiculous. i rarely use the mercedes now. it will cost me THOUSANDS OF PESOS just to get to makati and back
i wish we could all switch to the SMART CAR.

a city filled with smart cars — that’s certainly how i see the future. of course, my standards are too high
p.s. ethanol is obviously not working, no? it just causes food shortage. solar energy is the way to go. i say we plug the bleeping ozone layer hole with a device that sucks in solar power. we’ll solve two problems with one technology. hehe
i just have to share one more thought:
maybe the rising costs of fuel is a good thing. maybe it’s the world’s way of saving itself. now that nobody can afford to use their cars everyday, carbon emission is lessened, global warming is alleviated, and the world continues to exist.
mussolini: so a conspiracy again? LOL
you talk about solar energy; i’m sure you’ve heard about that solar-powered car invented by your fave school, DLSU.
I say we all go back to the olden days when cars weren’t considered a necessity but a luxury
Global warming can only be fought sensibly if all of us participate. Some countries don’t give a rat’s ass about it and politicians capitalize on the evironment bandwagon to secure their votes
I heard senior execs in Manila get two cars instead of one as part of their perks. The 2nd car has got to do with the plate restrictions, so the exec can drive all week long. These folks are a spoiled bunch don’t you think? I guess this will have to change now
nice video! hahaha… i really hope that people will start using the e-jeepney for short distance routes plus additional LRT/MRT routes.
i also heard that more and more people are taking the MRT/LRT. i can’t imagine how that would look like! maybe similar to the ones in japan where one person is there just to push people in.
bw: not only free cars (one, two, three, perhaps even more!), but free fuel! and they can even use government vehicles for private purposes. Government is the largest employer for no reason. LOL.
donG hO: oh that happens in MRT, too. had that experience before when I was working in Makati. i was pushed inside the MRT without making any effort! but the sight and smell wasn’t good. ugh!
